Singapore Secondary Malay Language (G2) Syllabus

This information is based on the 2021 syllabus implemented for the 2021 Secondary One cohort.

Introduction

The syllabus aims to develop students into active and proficient users of the Malay Language, focusing on Communication, Culture, and Connection. It builds upon the foundation established in primary school, enhancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as spoken and written interaction. Students will engage with various cultural and literary materials to strengthen their global and cross-cultural awareness.

Guiding Principles

The syllabus adheres to these principles:

1. Explicit and differentiated teaching of language skills and knowledge. 2. Systematic infusion of culture and values. 3. Leveraging technology and community partners to connect students with the Malay language beyond the classroom.

Content

The curriculum framework centers around engaging students in joyful learning, developing them into active learners and proficient users of the Malay language. It encompasses Language Skills, Language Knowledge, and Cultural Values.

  • Language Skills: Students will develop competency in six language skills: listening, reading, speaking, writing, spoken interaction, and written interaction.
  • Language Knowledge: This includes Linguistics (phonology, orthography, lexicon, grammar, and text knowledge) and Pragmatics (cultural references, registers, varieties, and functional purposes).
  • Cultural Values: The curriculum infuses positive values and promotes good character development. Units are organized around themes like relationships with friends, family, and community. Cultural and contemporary stories are integrated into the learning materials.

Key Features

The 2021 syllabus features these enhancements:

1. Deliberate Infusion of Cultural Knowledge and Appreciation: Cultural components are systematically infused to help students develop greater appreciation for Malay culture, including Material Civilisation, Behaviour & System, and Values & Philosophies. 2. Greater Exposure to Literary Texts: Increased inclusion of literary texts, especially at lower secondary levels, aims to promote joy of reading and prepare students for higher-level literature studies. 3. Use of Contemporary Issues and Current Affairs: Authentic contexts and resources related to contemporary issues and current affairs are used to enrich learning and demonstrate the relevance of the Malay language in the real world. 4. Greater Integration of ICT: ICT-based resources, such as video stimuli, language games, and interactive lesson packages, enhance interactivity and customization. The Student Learning Space (SLS) provides digital texts, social media, and learning resources.

Curriculum Differentiation

The curriculum offers four courses: G1, G2, G3 Mother Tongue Language, and Higher Mother Tongue Language, catering to diverse student needs.

Curriculum Time

The G2 Malay Language course has a designated weekly curriculum time. The exact number of hours depends on the total number of subjects offered.

Pedagogy

The syllabus emphasizes joyful and meaningful learning experiences infused with 21st Century Competencies. Key pedagogical approaches include:

  • Learner-Centred Mindset: Focusing on individual student needs and utilizing effective questioning techniques.
  • Collaborative Learning: Utilizing collaborative learning theories and communicative approaches to create interactive learning environments.

Assessment

Assessment is integral to teaching and learning. Key aspects of assessment include:

  • Clarity of Purpose: Aligning assessment methods with learning outcomes.
  • Variety of Assessment Modes: Utilizing various assessment modes, including national examinations, school-based standardized assessments, formative assessments, and alternative assessments like speeches, debates, and role-play.
  • Authentic Assessment: Designing assessment tasks that reflect real-world language use.
  • Encouraging Reflection: Promoting self-assessment and peer-assessment to develop metacognitive skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Lifelong Learning: Emphasizing that national examinations are a checkpoint in lifelong language learning, not the end goal. Focusing on creating joyful and meaningful learning experiences.
