Singapore Secondary 2 Malay Language (G3)
This information is based on the 2021 Singapore Secondary Mother Tongue Languages syllabus.
Course Objectives:
The syllabus aims to develop students into active and proficient users of Malay, focusing on:
- Communication: Enhancing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, including spoken and written interaction.
- Culture: Understanding and appreciating various cultural and literary materials to strengthen global and cross-cultural awareness.
- Connection: Using Malay in authentic situations beyond the classroom.
Guiding Principles:
- Explicit and differentiated teaching of language skills and knowledge.
- Systematic infusion of culture and values.
- Leveraging technology and community partners to connect students to Malay beyond the classroom.
Curriculum Framework:
The curriculum framework is built on the objectives of Communication, Culture, and Connection, encompassing Language Skills, Language Knowledge, and Cultural Values.
- Language Skills: Listening, reading, speaking, writing, spoken interaction, and written interaction.
- Language Knowledge:
- Linguistics: Phonology, orthography, lexicon (vocabulary), grammar, and knowledge of text.
- Pragmatics: Cultural references, registers, varieties, and functional purposes.
- Cultural Values: Learning about Malay heritage, tradition, culture, and values through themes like relationships, family, and community, interwoven with cultural and contemporary stories.
Key Features:
- Cultural Knowledge and Appreciation: Systematic infusion of cultural elements (Material Civilisation, Behaviour & System, and Values & Philosophies) with differentiated instruction.
- Engagement with Literary Texts: Increased proportion of literary texts, chosen and adapted for different proficiency levels, to promote joy of reading.
- Contemporary Issues and Current Affairs: Use of authentic contexts and resources categorized by themes and curated for learning needs, age, and proficiency.
- Integration of ICT: ICT-based resources (video stimuli, language games, interactive lessons) and non-print materials in the Student Learning Space (SLS) to enhance interactivity and collaborative learning.
