Singapore Secondary 2 Mother Tongue Language - Tamil Language (G1)

The Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) implemented a new Mother Tongue Language (MTL) syllabus starting with the 2021 Secondary One cohort. This syllabus aims to develop students into proficient MTL users through three objectives: Communication, Culture, and Connection.

Curriculum Framework:

The curriculum focuses on developing language skills (listening, speaking, reading, writing, spoken interaction, and written interaction), language knowledge (linguistics and pragmatics), and cultural values. It emphasizes joyful learning and active engagement with the language.

Key Features:

  • Cultural Infusion: The syllabus integrates cultural knowledge and appreciation into the curriculum, promoting cross-cultural sensitivity and a stronger cultural identity.
  • Literary Texts: Increased exposure to literary texts aims to foster a joy of reading and encourage further study of literature.
  • Contemporary Issues: The use of contemporary issues and current affairs contextualizes learning and demonstrates the relevance of MTL in the real world.
  • ICT Integration: ICT-enabled lessons enhance interactivity and customization of learning experiences.

Curriculum Differentiation:

The MTL curriculum offers different courses (G1, G2, G3, and Higher Mother Tongue) to cater to students' diverse learning needs. G1 caters to students who may require more foundational support in the language.

Pedagogy:

The teaching approach emphasizes learner-centeredness, collaborative learning, effective use of e-pedagogy, incorporation of authentic materials, and contextualized discussions on culture and literary texts. The goal is to extend learning beyond the classroom and foster lifelong learning.

Assessment:

Assessment is integral to the learning process and includes both Assessment of Learning (summative) and Assessment for Learning (formative). A variety of assessment modes are used, including traditional assessments, weighted assessments, and alternative assessments like speeches and debates. Authentic assessment tasks, peer assessment, and self-assessment are also encouraged.
