Singapore Secondary 1 Literature in English G3

The Secondary 1 Literature in English G3 course aims to develop students into empathetic and global thinkers, critical readers, creative meaning-makers, and convincing communicators. The curriculum is structured around a Literary Response Framework, emphasizing the dynamic interplay between texts, readers, and the world.

Literary Response Framework:

This framework, visualized as an "eye," guides students to engage with texts holistically. It comprises five key areas:

1. Literary Text: The core of the framework, where students actively construct meaning.

2. Five Areas of Study:

      • Plot: The arrangement of events and their causal relationships.
      • Character: Representations of people, creatures, or objects with motivations and qualities.
      • Setting and Atmosphere: The time, place, and emotional tone of the narrative.
      • Style: The writer's use of language to achieve specific effects.
      • Theme: The central ideas and concerns explored in the text.

3. Processes:

      • Responding through Dialogue and Writing: Students engage in discussions and written exercises to develop and refine their understanding. This includes quick informal activities and more sustained, organized tasks.

4. Lenses:

      • Experiencing Story: Immersing in the narrative world and empathizing with characters.
      • Appreciating Style: Analyzing the writer's craft and its impact on the reader.
      • Interpreting Theme: Exploring the text's significance and its connection to the world.

5. Connections:

      • Self: Relating the text to personal experiences.
      • The World: Connecting the text to its cultural, historical, and social contexts.
      • Other Readers: Engaging in discussions and considering different perspectives.
      • Other Texts: Drawing connections to other literary works.

Learning Outcomes and Knowledge, Skills, and Dispositions:

The curriculum outlines specific learning outcomes categorized by lenses and processes, each supported by a set of knowledge, skills, and dispositions (KSDs). These KSDs are further divided into introductory and advanced levels, building a strong foundation for upper secondary learning.

Genre Specifications:

At the Secondary 1 level, students study texts across three genres:

  • Prose: A novel or a selection of short stories.
  • Poetry: A range of 8-12 poems from Singapore and other parts of the world.
  • Drama: One play or a selection of short plays.

Lang-Art Interdisciplinary Project (IDP):

The Marsiling Secondary School presentation highlights a Lang-Art IDP, integrating literature with art. This project involves text annotation, drawing, and developing personal responses.
