Singapore Secondary 1 Mathematics G1

This course aims to equip students with essential mathematical concepts and skills for practical application and further learning. The curriculum emphasizes problem-solving, connecting mathematical ideas, and building confidence in using mathematics for informed decision-making.

The course is structured around three core content strands: Number and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, and Statistics and Probability.

Number and Algebra

This strand covers fundamental number operations, ratios, percentages, and algebraic expressions.

  • Numbers and their operations: Includes negative numbers, primes, integers, fractions, decimals, and basic calculator usage (squares, cubes, square roots, cube roots). Number line representation, ordering, approximation, and estimation are also covered.
  • Ratio and proportion: Introduces comparing quantities by ratio, dividing quantities in given ratios, ratios involving fractions and decimals, equivalent ratios, and simplifying ratios.
  • Percentage: Covers expressing percentages as fractions or decimals, finding the whole from a percentage part, expressing one quantity as a percentage of another, comparing quantities by percentage, percentages greater than 100%, and percentage increase/decrease.
  • Algebraic expressions and formulae: Introduces using letters to represent numbers, interpreting notations, evaluating algebraic expressions and formulae, recognizing number sequences, and translating real-world situations into algebraic expressions.

Geometry and Measurement

This strand focuses on angles, shapes, symmetry, and mensuration.

  • Angles, triangles and quadrilaterals: Covers right, acute, obtuse, and reflex angles. Also includes vertically opposite angles, angles on a straight line, angles at a point, and angles formed by parallel lines and a transversal.
  • Symmetry: Introduces line and rotational symmetry of plane figures, lines of symmetry, and order of rotational symmetry.
  • Mensuration: Covers area of triangles, parallelograms, trapeziums, and circles. Circumference of circles, volume and surface area of cubes and cuboids, and unit conversions (cm² to m², cm³ to m³) are also included. Problems involving composite plane figures and solids are also addressed.

Statistics and Probability

This strand introduces data handling, analysis, and basic probability.

  • Data Handling and Analysis: Covers collecting, classifying, and tabulating data. Analysis and interpretation of tables, bar graphs, pictograms, line graphs, and pie charts are included. The advantages and disadvantages of different statistical representations are also discussed.
  • Probability: Introduces probability as a measure of chance and the probability of single events, including listing possible outcomes in simple chance situations.

A 2024 content outline from Yishun Secondary School provides a more detailed breakdown of the topics covered throughout the Secondary 1 year, including specific chapters and assessments. This outline demonstrates a practical application of the syllabus, outlining the teaching sequence and assessment schedule for the year. It also highlights the integration of technology, such as using Excel for creating statistical diagrams.
