Singapore Junior College Year 1 (JC1) Subjects - H2 Subjects (Choose 3)
H2 subjects in JC1 are more demanding than H1 subjects, covering a broader range of topics and requiring more study time. Students typically choose three H2 subjects, alongside H1 subjects, General Paper (GP), Project Work (PW), and Mother Tongue Language (MTL). Some junior colleges allow students who meet specific criteria, such as achieving a L1R5 score of 9 or better, to take four H2 subjects. One H2 subject must be from a contrasting discipline. Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) can be taken in place of H1 GP as a fourth H2 subject.
Common H2 Subject Combinations:
While subject combinations vary between junior colleges, some common combinations include:
- Science Stream: Typically includes H2 Physics, H2 Chemistry, H2 Mathematics, and H2 Biology. Some JCs offer hybrid options with two science and two humanities subjects.
- Humanities Stream: May include subjects like H2 History, H2 Geography, H2 Literature, and H2 Economics.
- Arts Stream: May include H2 Art, H2 Music, and H2 Theatre Studies, often combined with humanities subjects. Specific language and literature subjects, such as H2 Chinese Language & Literature, H2 Malay Language & Literature, and H2 Tamil Language & Literature, are available, sometimes with restrictions based on prior qualifications.
H2 Subject Examples:
- H2 Mathematics: Covers algebra, calculus, and statistics.
- H2 Biology: Explores topics such as cell biology, genetics, and ecology.
- H2 Chemistry: Covers organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry.
H1, H2, and H3 Subjects:
- H1 Subjects: Condensed versions of H2 subjects, requiring less study time.
- H2 Subjects: More in-depth than H1 subjects, with broader content coverage.
- H3 Subjects: Optional, research-based subjects for high-achieving students, allowing for specialized study beyond the H2 level. Both H1 and H2 subjects meet A-Level standards, with H2 requiring double the curriculum time.
