H1 Geography

This course introduces students to the complexities of interactions between the physical environment, the economy, and society, which are the three key dimensions of sustainable development. The curriculum is built upon six geographical concepts:

• Place: The significance of location and the unique characteristics of different places.
• Space: The distribution of phenomena and the patterns and processes that create them.
• Scale: The spatial extent of geographical phenomena and the impact of scale on analysis.
• Interconnection: The relationships between different places and the flows of people, goods, and ideas.
• Change: The dynamic nature of geographical phenomena and the processes of change over time.
• Sustainability: Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Syllabus Topics

The H1 Geography syllabus is structured around two main clusters:

Cluster 1: Sustainable Future and Climate Change

This cluster explores the challenges and opportunities presented by climate change and the pursuit of a sustainable future. Topics include:

• Climate and Climate Change: Understanding tropical climates, the causes and consequences of climate change, and the potential impacts on human societies and the environment.
• The Future with Climate Change: Examining the ability of societies to respond effectively to climate change and exploring strategies for mitigation and adaptation.

Cluster 2: Fieldwork

This cluster focuses on developing practical geographical skills through fieldwork investigations. Students will learn how to:

• Formulate research questions: Developing clear and focused research questions related to geographical phenomena.
• Collect and analyze data: Gathering primary and secondary data, using appropriate methods, and analyzing the data to draw meaningful conclusions.
• Present findings: Communicating research findings effectively through written reports and presentations.
