Junior College Mother Tongue Language (H1)
This subject is a compulsory subject offered at the H1 level in Junior College (JC). Students are required to take this subject unless they have been granted an exemption by the Ministry of Education (MOE) or have already met the requirement through prior qualifications. One way to be exempted is by passing the Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL) at the O-Level examinations. Even with an exemption, the H1 Mother Tongue is still considered in university admission requirements.
Curriculum
The H1 Mother Tongue Language curriculum aims to develop students' abilities in their respective mother tongues. The revised 2020 syllabus focuses on developing engaged learners. For students who have taken HMTL at the O-Levels, they are still required to attend H1 MTL lessons and sit for the GCE 'A' Level H1 MTL exam at the end of JC1.
Assessment
The H1 Mother Tongue Languages are typically examined at the end of JC1. Anglo-Chinese Junior College (ACJC) assesses the subject through two papers: a 3-hour Paper 1 and a 2-hour Paper 2. The H1 Mother Tongue grade is included in the computation of rank points for university admission.
Exemption
Students who have passed their Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL) in Secondary School can be exempted from taking H1 Mother Tongue. However, if a student did not take the O-Level HMTL, it is compulsory for them to take H1 MTL in JC. Exemptions are also possible for students with special circumstances, such as those returning from overseas or expatriates. Even with an exemption, the H1 Mother Tongue subject is still factored into university admission requirements. |
