Slovakia First Grade Primary School Curriculum - Ethics/Religious Education

Ethics and Religious Education

In Slovakia, primary education spans nine grades, divided into two stages. The first stage encompasses grades 1 to 4, while the second stage covers grades 5 to 9. All public elementary school students are required to take either a religion or ethics class, based on parental preference. Schools have some flexibility in developing their curricula for religion classes, but these must align with the Ministry of Education's National Educational Program. Religious Education (RE) is taught from the first grade and is not graded in state schools. For religion or ethics classes, students from different classes within the same grade may be combined into groups of up to 20 pupils. Ethical education serves as a compulsory alternative for students who do not attend religious education.
