Slovakia Primary School Physical Education

Slovakia's primary education system includes physical education as part of the curriculum. A curriculum reform was launched in 2020 and began implementation in September 2023, initially in 40 primary schools. The reform aims to modernize the curriculum and equip students with 21st-century skills. The new curriculum emphasizes critical thinking, digital literacy, and soft skills.

While specific details about the 3rd-grade curriculum remain elusive, some information related to primary physical education is available:

  • Health and Movement: Physical education in primary schools falls under the "Health and Movement" training area within the State Educational Programme. Research has explored the role of tandem teaching in physical and sports education within the curriculum reform.
  • Sports Classes: Primary schools can offer "Sports classes" with increased hours of physical education, focusing on specific sports.
  • Mixed Martial Arts: As of January 2023, schools can include a combat sports module, including mixed martial arts, in their physical education curriculum at Key Stage 1.

Further research and inquiries with the Slovak Ministry of Education or individual schools may be necessary to obtain the specific details of the 3rd-grade physical education curriculum under the new reform.
