Slovakia Civics Curriculum (5th Grade)
The Slovak education system consists of 10 years of compulsory school attendance, starting at age 6. Primary school (základná škola) comprises Grades 1 to 9 and is divided into two stages:
- Lower Primary School (ISCED 1): Grades 1 to 4
- Upper Primary School (ISCED 2): Grades 5 to 9
Social and civic competences are integrated into the curriculum throughout compulsory school attendance. While there isn't a dedicated "Civics" subject in the lower primary school, these competencies are developed through other subjects. In upper primary school (which includes 5th grade), civics education becomes more formalized.
The Slovak Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport is responsible for overseeing the education system and developing curriculum documents. While a specific 5th-grade civics curriculum document wasn't found, research indicates that primary school teachers often go beyond the prescribed curriculum to incorporate civic education into their teaching.
The Slovak National Curriculum Framework undergoes periodic reforms to meet the evolving needs of education. Recent reforms have focused on 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, digital literacy, and civic engagement. |
