Slovakia 5th Grade Curriculum - Second Foreign Language

The Slovak Ministry of Education, as of January 3, 2022, mandates English as the first foreign language starting in the 3rd grade. For the second foreign language, schools are required to offer options chosen from French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Russian, based on school resources and student interest. This second foreign language is offered within the framework of optional hours. The curriculum allows schools flexibility in distributing teaching content within each grade level, while adhering to learning standards, logical structure, age appropriateness, and total teaching hours for each subject. The updated State Educational Programs (ŠVP) for primary and lower secondary education emphasize science subjects and technical education.
