Slovakia 7th Grade Curriculum - 1st Foreign Language

Overview

The Slovak education system consists of 10 years of compulsory school attendance, typically starting at age 6. Primary school encompasses grades 1 through 9, with lower secondary education covering grades 5 through 9.

Foreign Language Education

As of 2019, Slovak pupils can choose from several foreign languages. While English was previously compulsory, this is no longer the case. Typically, students learn two foreign languages. Common choices include English, German, French, Russian, and Spanish. The availability of specific languages may vary depending on the school.

Curriculum Reform

Slovakia has been undergoing curriculum reform to meet 21st-century educational needs, focusing on critical thinking, digital skills, and other key competencies. This reform affects primary and lower secondary education, including the 7th grade. The national curriculum is divided into seven educational areas, including Language and Communication.
