Slovakia Primary School Civics

Civics education in Slovakia is part of the broader curriculum throughout primary school, interwoven into various subjects rather than being a standalone subject. Social and civic competences are developed through formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences. Primary school teachers often go beyond the official curriculum to incorporate broader civic activities and discussions. The curriculum emphasizes active participation and aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for democratic citizenship. A new national curriculum was introduced in September 2023, with a phased rollout across primary schools. In secondary school, civics becomes a distinct subject.
