Slovakia: Physical Education (Lower Secondary Education) - 9th Grade
Curriculum Overview
Physical education in Slovakia is a compulsory subject for all students, including those in 9th grade, which is part of lower secondary education (ISCED 2). The curriculum emphasizes the development of physical literacy, health, and fitness through various activities. The Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic is responsible for the development and support of sports and physical education within the education system.
Curriculum Structure
The State Educational Programme for ISCED 2 includes "Health and Movement" as one of its eight training areas. This framework is implemented within schools through the subject of physical education. Generally, two physical education classes per week are recommended. For classes with more than 25 students, or if the activities require it, the class is divided into two groups.
A curricular reform launched in 2020, focusing on primary and lower secondary education, aims to modernize education by emphasizing 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, digital literacy, and collaboration. This reform also impacts the "Health and Movement" educational field and the subject of Physical and Sport Education.
Physical Education Activities
Physical education classes in Slovakia incorporate a variety of activities, including:
- Games
- Individual kinetic exercises
- Exercises with equipment
- Collective sports
- Exercise in nature
- Sports
Assessment
Students receive grades for their performance in physical education, and it is a mandatory subject at the secondary school level. Additional compulsory elements may include ski courses, swimming courses, and courses on life protection.
Pathways after 9th Grade
After completing 9th grade, students can choose between vocational education tracks (trade schools) or continue with general education, which can lead to higher education opportunities. Secondary sports schools are also available for students with athletic talent, preparing them for professional sports careers or further studies in sports-related fields. |
