Slovakia Fifth Grade Civics Curriculum
Civics education in Slovakia is integrated into the broader educational framework, emphasizing social and civic competences throughout compulsory schooling (grades 1-9). Fifth grade falls within the second stage of primary school (grades 5-9), where civics is a compulsory subject alongside other core subjects like Slovak language and literature, history, geography, mathematics, science, and foreign languages.
While the precise learning objectives for fifth grade civics remain elusive, the curriculum aims to develop students' understanding of social, political, and legal aspects of everyday life, including rights and obligations of citizens. Teachers are encouraged to go beyond the formal curriculum and incorporate extracurricular activities and discussions to foster civic participation among young people.
The Slovak Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport oversees the national curriculum framework. A curriculum reform focusing on 21st-century skills like critical thinking and digital literacy has been implemented, impacting primary and lower secondary education. |
