Slovenia Slovenščina Curriculum (2. razred)

This curriculum outlines the objectives and content for Slovenščina (Slovene) in the 2nd grade of primary school in Slovenia. It is divided into two main areas: Language and Literature. The curriculum emphasizes the development of communication skills through various activities involving both literary and non-literary texts.

Language:

  • Developing Linguistic, National, and Civic Awareness: Students observe, compare, recognize, and name or describe various forms of communication, including verbal and non-verbal communication, the functions of language, and their relationship to their first language and Slovene. They also learn about the status of Slovene in Slovenia and other languages in the country.
  • Developing Conversational Skills: Students participate in different types of conversations, including personal and telephone conversations, and learn to identify social roles, emotional relationships, and conversational principles. They also evaluate their own conversational skills and plan for improvement.
  • Developing Listening Skills: Students listen to and watch various non-literary texts, summarize the main points, and evaluate the content. They also reflect on their listening skills and identify areas for improvement.
  • Developing Speaking Skills: Students practice speaking in front of an audience, evaluate their performance, and identify areas for improvement. They learn to use appropriate non-verbal communication and to speak clearly and in standard Slovene.
  • Developing Reading and Writing Skills: Students develop reading comprehension and writing skills through various activities, including reading and writing different types of texts such as letters, lists, news, narratives, and descriptions. They learn to identify the purpose and context of different texts and to evaluate their own writing.
  • Developing Language and Style Skills: Students expand their vocabulary, learn to use synonyms, antonyms, and other related words, and practice forming diminutives and other word forms. They also develop their syntax skills by forming sentences, asking questions, and using different grammatical structures. They learn to identify and correct language errors in their own writing and in the writing of others. They also develop their pronunciation skills by practicing standard Slovene pronunciation. They develop spelling skills by learning the rules for writing words with critical sounds, prepositions, negations, and other grammatical elements. They also learn to use capital letters, punctuation marks, and numerals correctly. They develop style skills by choosing appropriate language for different contexts and audiences. They learn to address people appropriately, to use polite language, and to express themselves effectively in different situations.
  • Developing Metalinguistic Skills: Students learn about language concepts and terminology, such as verbal and non-verbal communication, first language, foreign language, national language, standard and non-standard language, text, sentence, word, syllable, sound, letter, capital letter, punctuation marks, greetings, farewells, congratulations, invitations, descriptions, narratives, and news.

Literature:

  • Developing Reception Skills: Students listen to, read, and watch performances of literary texts, express their understanding and experiences, and compare their interpretations with those of their classmates. They learn to distinguish between literary and non-literary texts and to identify important elements of literary texts, such as characters, setting, plot, and theme.
  • Literary Genres and Types: Students explore different literary genres, including poetry and prose. In poetry, they learn to identify titles, stanzas, rhythm, rhyme, and figurative language. In prose, they learn to identify different types of narratives, such as fairy tales and stories, and to understand the elements of narrative structure, such as characters, setting, plot, and theme. They also learn about the role of the author and narrator.
  • Theater, Radio Plays, Cartoons, and Film: Students experience and discuss various forms of media, including theater performances, radio plays, cartoons, and films. They learn to identify the characteristics of each medium and to compare and contrast them with literary texts.
  • Developing Reception Skills through Creative Writing: Students develop their understanding of literary texts by writing creative texts, such as poems, stories, and plays. They also practice interpretative reading and speaking about literary texts.
