Slovenia Music Curriculum (Primary School)

Music education in Slovenia is compulsory from grades 1 through 9. It is typically taught for one hour per week. The curriculum emphasizes performing, listening, and creating musical activities. Musical creativity is encouraged through activities like making music, movement, and drawing/painting.

In addition to general music education, Slovenia offers specialized music education in elementary music schools. These schools follow a national curriculum. For woodwind, brass, and singing instruments, the program lasts 5 years, while for other instruments, it lasts 8 years. Students receive individual instrumental tuition twice a week for 30 minutes, theory lessons for one and a half hours per week, and orchestra or ensemble lessons. Primary music education can also be provided by private music schools.

The "Orff-Schulwerk" approach, which emphasizes group music, movement, creativity, and improvisation, is integrated into the Slovenian music education curriculum for elementary schools. Research has been conducted on musical creativity in Slovenian elementary schools, examining observable characteristics and commonalities among student statements. A study from April 2024 investigated the frequency of music improvisation activities in 4th-grade music lessons.
