Course Description:

Music education in the 8th grade focuses on developing students' musical abilities through performing, creating, and listening to music. The curriculum emphasizes domaća and foreign folk and art music from the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically the Classical and Romantic periods. Students explore the characteristics of these periods and their historical context, fostering an understanding of musical development within its cultural and historical framework. They also learn to express musical experiences creatively through other art forms.

Learning Objectives:

  • Perform domaća and foreign folk and art music from the 18th and 19th centuries.
  • Creatively express musical experiences and understanding of the selected music through other art forms.
  • Understand and use musical concepts related to the Classical and Romantic periods, such as absolute and programmatic music, sonata, string quartet, concerto, symphony, opera, art song, and miniature.
  • Recognize, compare, determine, and evaluate the basic characteristics of Classical and Romantic music.
  • Research and appreciate the works of prominent Slovenian and international composers from these periods.
  • Develop aesthetic sensitivity and responsibility towards the sonic environment.
  • Deepen understanding of the elements of musical design.
  • Use musical resources, interactive media, and modern technology.

Curriculum Content:

Performing:

  • Singing one-, two-, and multi-part folk and art songs.
  • Playing instruments (own, improvised, Orff, and folk) to accompany singing and rhythmic recitation.
  • Performing independent instrumental pieces.
  • Expressing musical experiences through movement and dance.
  • Applying interpretive elements in musical performance.

Creating:

  • Creatively expressing musical experiences and ideas about selected 18th- and 19th-century music in other artistic genres.
  • Creating vocal and instrumental musical content.
  • Practicing musical improvisation.
  • Recreating selected vocal and instrumental musical works.
  • Creatively designing accompaniments and creating musical forms and other musical content using various instruments.

Listening:

  • Listening to and identifying, comparing, determining, and evaluating the basic characteristics of Classical and Romantic music.
  • Attentively and analytically listening to pieces from Slovenian and international musical literature.
  • Expanding musical knowledge and abilities through listening.
  • Exploring, learning about, and appreciating the works of prominent composers from world and national musical culture.

Assessment and Evaluation:

Student knowledge and skills are assessed through various methods, including oral and written assessments, performance evaluations, creative project assessments, and portfolio reviews. The assessment criteria are based on the learning objectives and standards outlined in the curriculum.
