Slovenia Osnovna šola Curriculum - Nutrition

Nutrition education in Slovenian primary schools is primarily integrated into the Home Economics curriculum during 5th and 6th grade. The Home Economics curriculum covers four modules: Economics, Textile and Clothing, Living and the Environment, and Nutrition.

5th and 6th Grade - Home Economics - Nutrition Module:

Within the Nutrition module, students learn about the importance of a proper, safe, and balanced diet. They develop awareness of the impact of eating habits on health and are encouraged to adopt healthy eating practices. The curriculum covers topics such as:

  • Planning daily meals considering nutritional and energy values.
  • Utensils and appliances for food processing and preparation.
  • Understanding and interpreting food labels.
  • Food storage and hygiene.
  • The impact of good and bad eating habits on health.

Additional Nutrition Education:

While the core nutrition education occurs in 5th and 6th grade, some schools may offer elective courses in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade that expand upon these concepts. These electives, such as "Ways of Eating" and "Modern Food Preparation," may provide more in-depth knowledge and practical skills related to nutrition. There is also a national School Meals Program in place, regulated by the School Meals Act, which aims to provide healthy meals to students and contribute to their nutrition education. The program follows National Dietary Guidelines for Healthy Nutrition in Kindergartens and Schools.

It's important to note that specific learning objectives for nutrition in 8th grade are not readily available from the sources accessed. The information provided here represents a general overview of nutrition education within the Slovenian primary school system based on available resources.
