Slovenia Osnovna šola 8. razred Curriculum - Art: Contemporary Art Integration
This entry focuses on the integration of contemporary art into the 8th grade art curriculum in Slovenia, based on a research study conducted at Osnovna šola Malenik. The study aimed to explore student understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through various approaches, including classroom discussions, gallery visits, and creative projects.
The research involved three stages:
1. Introduction to Contemporary Art Concepts: Students were introduced to key concepts of contemporary art such as conceptualism, installation, and performance, along with the work of Slovenian artist Matej Andraž Vogrinčič. They then created artworks using everyday objects, exploring concepts like positive and negative space and various artistic variables. This stage highlighted the importance of material selection and the conceptual aspect of art creation.
2. Gallery Visit and Interpretation: Students visited the Zipped Worlds/Photography in Public Space exhibition at the Umetnostna galerija Maribor. They engaged in activities like analyzing exhibition texts, discussing artworks with the curator, and expressing their own interpretations through writing and drawing. This stage emphasized the role of context and interpretation in understanding contemporary art, and how additional information can shape viewer perception.
3. Interdisciplinary Project on Globalization: Connecting art with the subject of Homeland and Civic Culture and Ethics, students explored the theme of globalization. Inspired by the work of Apolonija Šušteršič and Bojana Kunst, they created photomontages reflecting on Slovenian identity and global reach. This stage fostered critical thinking and creative expression through an interdisciplinary approach.
The study found that students initially lacked a formed opinion on contemporary art. However, through the three stages, they developed a deeper understanding and appreciation, demonstrating increased sensibility and critical thinking. The research also highlighted the positive impact of interdisciplinary connections and hands-on creative experiences in engaging students with contemporary art. The use of authentic artworks and gallery visits proved crucial in fostering meaningful engagement and critical reflection. |
