Slovenia Matura Exam - Sociology

The Matura exam in Slovenia is a crucial school-leaving examination necessary for completing secondary education and gaining admission to undergraduate university courses. It is also a requirement for students seeking enrollment in vocational colleges. The exam consists of five subjects, with three compulsory subjects:

  • Mother Tongue (Slovenian, Italian, or Hungarian)
  • Mathematics
  • Foreign Language

Students then choose two optional subjects, which can include Sociology. Other optional subjects may include:

  • History
  • Geography
  • Philosophy
  • Psychology
  • Computer Science
  • Mechanics and other technical subjects.

The Matura exam is administered in two series: spring (May-June) and autumn (August-September). A mock exam is conducted for Year 4 students in March. The exam was reinstated in 1994 after a period of suspension for all upper secondary schools. It is considered a significant rite of passage in Slovenian education. The Matura certificate is awarded upon successful completion of the exam, which is typically taken after finishing the fourth year of Gimnazija or completing a Matura course.
