Slovenia Gimnazija Foreign Language 2 Curriculum

The Slovenian Gimnazija system requires students to take two foreign languages. The first foreign language is typically the one the student continued from elementary school, often English. The second foreign language is chosen from options including German, French, Spanish, Italian, and sometimes Russian.

Specific examples of language offerings:

  • II. gimnazija Maribor: Offers English, German, French, and Spanish. English is compulsory, while the others are offered as second foreign languages.
  • Gimnazija Celje – Center: Offers English as the first foreign language (continued from elementary school), with German, Spanish, and French available as second foreign languages.
  • Gimnazija Poljane: Offers German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Russian as second foreign language options.

While the specific curriculum for each language may vary between schools, the overall aim is to provide students with a strong foundation in at least two foreign languages, preparing them for university studies and future careers. The National Education Institute Slovenia develops the Gimnazija programs. Some Gimnazija also participate in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, which has its own language requirements.
