South Africa Grade 11 Home Language
This course aims to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for self-fulfillment and meaningful participation in society. It emphasizes cognitive academic language proficiency, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Learners will also develop literary, aesthetic, and imaginative abilities.
Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is organized around the following skills and content:
- Listening and Speaking: This includes the listening process (pre-listening, during listening, post-listening), different kinds of listening (for specific information, critical analysis, appreciation and interaction), and the speaking process (planning, researching, organizing, practicing, and presenting). Learners will study various oral communication text types, such as prepared and unprepared speeches, interviews, panel discussions, and debates.
- Reading and Viewing: This involves the reading process (pre-reading, reading, post-reading), interpretation of visual texts, vocabulary development, sentence structures, text organization, and features of literary texts (poetry, drama, novels, short stories, and film). Learners will engage with a range of texts, including literary and non-literary works, visual texts, and multimedia.
- Writing and Presenting: This covers process writing (planning, drafting, revising, editing, proofreading, presenting), language structures and conventions during the writing process, and features of different text types. Learners will practice writing various essays (narrative, descriptive, argumentative, discursive, reflective, literary) and transactional texts (formal and informal letters, meeting agendas and minutes, speeches, dialogues, interviews, reports, reviews, newspaper and magazine articles, CVs, and obituaries).
- Language Structures and Conventions: This includes vocabulary development, sentence structures, and critical language awareness. These elements are integrated within the other language skills and are taught in context.
Assessment
Assessment is both informal (Assessment for Learning) and formal (Assessment of Learning). Formal assessment tasks are marked and recorded for progression and certification.
- School-Based Assessment (SBA): 25% of the final grade. This includes tests, assignments, presentations, and other tasks throughout the year.
- End-of-Year Examination: 75% of the final grade. This consists of written exams (Paper 1: Language in Context, Paper 2: Literature, Paper 3: Writing) and an oral assessment (Paper 4).
