South Africa Grade 11 Visual Arts Syllabus

This syllabus outlines the curriculum for Visual Arts in Grade 11, based on the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) document. The curriculum is divided into three main topics:

Topic 1: Conceptualising through the Development and Realisation of Creative Ideas (30%)

  • Developmental Process:
      • Applying different approaches to generating ideas in response to a project brief. This includes collecting reference materials, sketching, writing, and researching various artists and their work to inform the learner's own work.
      • Engaging with personal experiences through the exploration and interpretation of signs and symbols drawn from broader visual culture. This involves collecting interesting references and objects of personal significance that may be useful for practical projects.
  • Realisation of a Concept:
      • Applying the creative process to solve visual and conceptual problems through classroom assignments.
      • Documenting the process of conceptual development. This documentation should be recorded in a sourcebook, which serves as a visual diary and idea repository. The sourcebook should contain sketches, preparatory drawings, collected images, articles, objects, doodles, writings, artist research, and reflections on the creative process.

Topic 2: Making of Creative Artworks, Management of Process and Presentation, Following Safe Practice (40%)

  • Making of Artworks:
      • Exploring and effectively applying a selection of materials, tools, processes, and technologies.
      • Demonstrating developed technical skill and knowledge of a range of materials, techniques, processes, and equipment.
      • Documenting and evaluating the creative process and artworks using a portfolio.
      • Ensuring artworks are relevant to the project brief.
      • Demonstrating an expanding use of technology in producing artworks.
  • Management:
      • Maintaining sketchbooks, journals, planners, and a portfolio that documents a developing grasp of visual language and concepts.
      • Planning and completing tasks within specified time, space, and resource constraints.
  • Presentation:
      • Displaying, exhibiting, or presenting work in a manner that demonstrates awareness of professional conventions.
  • Safe Practice:
      • Using equipment, materials, and technology safely and correctly.
