South Africa Grade 2 English Home Language Syllabus

The Grade 2 English Home Language curriculum in South Africa focuses on five key components: Listening & Speaking, Phonics & Spelling, Reading, Handwriting, and Writing. These components are taught throughout the year, integrated within various themes and topics. The curriculum is aligned with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).

Key Components:

  • Listening & Speaking: Activities focus on developing learners' ability to understand and respond to spoken language, as well as express themselves orally.
  • Phonics & Spelling: Phonics instruction introduces and reinforces letter-sound relationships, building a foundation for reading and spelling. The CAPS document outlines a paced introduction of phonics sounds.
  • Reading: Learners develop reading comprehension skills through various activities, including reading aloud and silently.
  • Handwriting: Focus is placed on developing legible handwriting skills.
  • Writing: Activities encourage learners to express their thoughts and ideas in writing, with a focus on creative writing and basic sentence structure.

Resources and Support:

Various resources are available to support teachers and learners, including workbooks, lesson plans, and assessment materials. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) ePortal and Twinkl offer a range of resources aligned with the CAPS curriculum.
