South Africa Grade 4 Life Skills

The Life Skills curriculum for Grade 4 in South Africa focuses on the holistic development of the learner, equipping them with essential skills for personal and social well-being, creative expression, and physical development. The curriculum is divided into three main study areas: Personal and Social Well-being, Creative Arts, and Physical Education.

Personal and Social Well-being

This study area aims to develop learners' self-awareness, build healthy relationships, and promote responsible decision-making. It covers topics such as:

  • Developing the Self: This strand focuses on building self-esteem, understanding emotions, and developing coping mechanisms for challenging situations.
  • Health: Learners explore healthy habits related to hygiene, nutrition, and safety. They also learn about the importance of respecting their own bodies and the bodies of others.
  • Environmental Awareness: This component emphasizes the interconnectedness between personal well-being and the environment. Learners develop an understanding of environmental issues and learn how to make responsible choices to protect the planet.

Creative Arts

This study area encourages learners to express themselves through various art forms, fostering creativity, imagination, and critical thinking. It encompasses:

  • Visual Arts: Learners explore different art mediums and techniques, creating 2D and 3D artwork. They also learn about art from different cultures.
  • Performing Arts: This includes dance, drama, and music. Learners develop skills in movement, vocal expression, and musicality.

Physical Education

This study area promotes physical activity, healthy lifestyles, and the development of gross motor skills. Key areas of focus include:

  • Locomotion: Learners develop skills in running, jumping, skipping, and hopping.
  • Movement Concepts: Learners explore concepts such as balance, coordination, and spatial awareness.
  • Games and Sports: Learners participate in various games and sports, developing teamwork, sportsmanship, and an appreciation for physical activity.
