South Africa Grade 5 Home Language

This course is based on the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for English Home Language, as provided by the South African Department of Basic Education. The curriculum aims to develop learners' proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing, and presenting, with a focus on language structures and conventions.

Core Language Skills

  • Listening and Speaking: Learners engage in various oral communication activities, including prepared and unprepared speeches, storytelling, discussions, debates, and interviews. They develop critical listening skills to analyze messages and identify bias.
  • Reading and Viewing: Learners develop reading strategies for comprehension and engage with a variety of texts, including literature, informational texts, and visual media. They learn to analyze text features, structures, and author's purpose.
  • Writing and Presenting: Learners practice writing different text types, such as narratives, descriptions, and transactional texts. They learn the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising, editing, and presenting.
  • Language Structures and Conventions: Learners build upon their foundational knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling. They learn to analyze language use in different contexts and apply this knowledge to their own writing.

Learning and Teaching Support Materials

Learners should have access to core materials, including a prescribed language textbook, a dictionary, and readers containing various text types (folklore, short stories, novels, drama, and poetry). Media materials such as newspapers, magazines, and television and radio programs are also recommended.

Assessment

Assessment is ongoing and includes both informal and formal methods. Informal assessment involves daily monitoring of progress through observation, discussions, and practical demonstrations. Formal assessment includes tests, examinations, projects, presentations, and written tasks. A formal program of assessment is implemented, with tasks designed to assess all four language skills and language structures and conventions.
