South Africa Grade 5 Natural Sciences and Technology

This course covers the fundamental principles of science and technology, focusing on practical applications and problem-solving skills. The curriculum is aligned with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS).

The course is divided into four terms, each focusing on specific themes:

  • Plants and animals on Earth: This topic explores the diversity of life in different habitats within South Africa.
  • Animal skeletons: Learners study the structure and function of different types of animal skeletons.
  • Food chains: This section introduces the concept of energy transfer within ecosystems.
  • Life cycles: Learners examine the different stages of development in various organisms.

Term 2: Matter and Materials

  • Properties of metals and non-metals: Learners investigate the characteristics of different materials.
  • Uses of metals: This topic explores the practical applications of metals in everyday life.
  • Processed materials: Learners study how raw materials are transformed into useful products.

Term 3: Energy and Change

  • Energy stored in fuels: This topic explores different sources of energy and how energy is stored.
  • Energy and electricity: Learners study the relationship between energy and electricity.
  • Energy and movement: This section investigates how energy causes movement.

Term 4: Planet Earth and Beyond

  • Our planet: This topic explores the Earth's features and processes.
  • The surface of the Earth: Learners study the different layers and formations on the Earth's surface.
  • Sedimentary rocks: This section investigates the formation and properties of sedimentary rocks.
  • Fossils: Learners study fossils as evidence of past life.
