South Africa Grade 7 Life Orientation

Life Orientation is a mandatory subject in the South African CAPS curriculum, focusing on the development of self in society. It aims to equip learners with essential life skills for personal, social, intellectual, emotional, and physical growth, preparing them for a rapidly changing society.

Term 1: Development of Self in Society

This term focuses on self-image, personal hygiene, and cultural rites of passage. Learners explore their positive qualities, building a healthy relationship with themselves, family, and friends. They also learn about basic hygiene principles and reflect on the meaning of different cultural rites of passage in South African cultures, such as birth, baptism, weddings, and death.

Term 2: Constitutional Rights and Responsibilities

Learners delve into the South African Constitution, exploring their rights and responsibilities as citizens. They learn about the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and its role in protecting human rights.

Term 3: Health, Social, and Environmental Responsibility

This term addresses substance abuse awareness and prevention, environmental health issues, and career exploration. Learners develop an understanding of the impact of substance abuse and explore strategies for prevention. They also investigate environmental health problems and learn about ways to promote conservation. Projects may involve researching various careers and participating in career day activities.

Term 4: World of Work and Environmental Issues

This term builds upon previous themes, with a focus on environmental conservation and exploring the world of work.
