South Africa Grade 9 First Additional Language

This course focuses on developing learners' proficiency in their First Additional Language, encompassing skills in listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing, and presenting. The curriculum, guided by the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), aims to equip learners with the language skills necessary for effective communication and learning across various subjects.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of Grade 9, learners should be able to use their First Additional Language confidently and effectively for diverse purposes, including academic learning and social interaction. They should demonstrate proficiency in all language skills, including listening, speaking, reading, viewing, writing, and presenting.

Language Skills

The curriculum emphasizes the integration of the four main language skills:

  • Listening and Speaking: Learners develop skills in understanding and interpreting spoken language, as well as expressing themselves fluently and accurately.
  • Reading and Viewing: Learners develop skills in comprehending and analyzing written and visual texts, including different genres and media.
  • Writing and Presenting: Learners develop skills in producing various written texts, including narratives, essays, and transactional writing, as well as presenting information effectively.

Literature

Learners engage with a variety of literary texts, including prose, poetry, and drama, to develop their appreciation of literature and enhance their language skills.

Assessment

Assessment in Grade 9 First Additional Language includes both formal and informal assessments. Formal assessments may include tests, examinations, oral presentations, and writing tasks. The weighting of different components may vary.
