South Korea Grade 3 Curriculum - Korean Language

Korean Language

The Korean Language curriculum is a core subject within the South Korean education system, spanning from elementary to high school. The curriculum emphasizes the development of communication skills, reading comprehension, and writing proficiency. It also aims to foster an appreciation for Korean literature and culture. In elementary school (grades 1-6), Korean Language is taught alongside other core subjects like Mathematics, Social Studies/Moral Education, Science/Practical Arts, Physical Education, Arts (Music/Art), and English. For grades 1 and 2, Korean Language and Mathematics are taught separately, while other subjects are integrated into Moral Life, Inquiring Life, and Pleasant Life.

Specifically, for Grade 3, Korean Language is allocated 408 instructional hours (each hour being 40 minutes long) within a two-year grade cluster (grades 3-4). This time allocation can be adjusted based on various factors like weather, student development, and school circumstances. One resource available for Grade 3-4 is the "Korean Language Activities: Elementary School: Grades 3-4" published by the Ministry of Education. This curriculum aims to build upon the foundational language skills acquired in the earlier grades and further develop students' abilities in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. It also introduces students to more complex grammatical structures and expands their vocabulary. Furthermore, the curriculum incorporates elements of Korean literature and culture to enrich students' understanding and appreciation of their heritage.
