South Sudan Primary 4 Syllabus - Local Languages

The official language of instruction in South Sudan is English. However, recognizing the linguistic diversity of the country, with over 60 indigenous languages, the Ministry of General Education and Instruction has implemented a policy where local languages are used as the medium of instruction in pre-primary and primary levels 1 through 3. This aims to maximize learner enrollment and facilitate early literacy and numeracy skills acquisition. Beginning in Primary 4, the language of instruction shifts to English across all schools and subjects. This transition is supported by the availability of English textbooks and teacher guides, designed to align with the national curriculum. While local languages are not formally taught in Primary 4, they remain an integral part of the South Sudanese cultural heritage. Resources for various local languages, such as Dinka, are available for those interested in personal study.
