South Sudan Primary 8 Curriculum - Mathematics

This curriculum is based on the South Sudan Ministry of General Education and Instruction's Primary 8 Mathematics syllabus. It aims to develop learners' mathematical competencies through a practical and engaging approach. The curriculum is presented in six units, each covering various subtopics. The Pupil's Book ([ and Teacher's Guide ([ provide detailed information on the curriculum content and teaching strategies.

Unit 1: Numbers

This unit revisits fundamental number concepts and introduces more complex problem-solving.

  • Factors and Multiples: Learners explore factors and multiples of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Squares and Square Roots: This subtopic covers calculating squares of numbers, finding square roots of perfect squares, and estimating square roots of non-perfect squares. It extends to finding squares and square roots of decimals and fractions.
  • Conversions: Learners practice converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Applications: This section focuses on applying fractions, decimals, and percentages to real-life situations.

Unit 2: Measurement

This unit covers various measurement concepts, including perimeter, area, volume, and conversions between units.

  • Perimeter: Learners calculate the perimeter of rectangles, squares, triangles, circles (circumference), and trapeziums.
  • Area: This subtopic covers calculating the area of rectangles, squares, triangles, circles, and trapeziums.
  • Surface Area: Learners calculate the surface area of cubes and cuboids. The Teacher's Guide also mentions spheres, cylinders, cones, triangular prisms, and square-based pyramids, though these do not appear in the Pupil's Book.
  • Volume: This section introduces the concept of volume and covers calculating the volume of cubes and cuboids. The Teacher's Guide also mentions volumes of spheres, cylinders, and cones.
  • Unit Conversion: Learners practice converting between cubic meters (m³) and cubic centimeters (cm³).
  • Time, Speed, and Distance: This subtopic covers solving problems involving time, speed, and distance, including unit conversions for speed (m/s and km/h).

Unit 3: Geometry

This unit focuses on geometric constructions, properties of shapes, and coordinate geometry.

  • Inscribing and Circumscribing Circles: Learners practice inscribing and circumscribing circles in and around triangles.
  • Pyramids and Prisms: This section introduces pyramids and prisms, and learners identify their faces, vertices, and edges.
  • Scale: Learners work with scale drawings and maps, interpreting and applying scale factors.
  • Coordinates: This subtopic introduces the Cartesian plane and plotting coordinates.

Unit 4: Algebra

This unit introduces algebraic concepts, including simplifying expressions, forming equations, and working with sets.

  • Simplifying Algebraic Expressions: Learners simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms.
  • Word Problems: This section covers translating word statements into algebraic expressions and solving related problems.
  • Sets: Learners are introduced to set theory, including concepts like union, intersection, empty sets, equal sets, and finite/infinite sets. Venn diagrams are used to represent sets and their relationships.

Unit 5: Statistics

This unit covers data collection, analysis, interpretation, and probability.

  • Data Collection Process: Learners explore the steps involved in collecting data, including identifying issues, setting goals, planning methods, collecting data, analyzing and interpreting data, and acting on results.
  • Reading and Interpreting Tables and Graphs: Learners interpret data presented in tables and various types of graphs, including bar graphs, pie charts, and line graphs.
  • Probability: This section introduces probability and covers calculating the likelihood of simple events.

Unit 6: Business Accounting

This unit applies mathematical concepts to business contexts.

  • Commissions: Learners calculate commissions earned based on sales.
  • Discounts: This subtopic covers calculating discounts and discounted prices.
  • Hire Purchase: Learners solve problems involving hire purchase, including calculating deposits and installments.
  • Profit and Loss: This section covers calculating profit and loss in business transactions.
  • Simple Interest: Learners calculate simple interest on loans and deposits.
  • Compound Interest: This subtopic introduces compound interest and learners calculate compound interest earned or paid.
  • Cash Accounts: Learners prepare and balance simple cash accounts.
