South Sudan Primary 4 Curriculum - Mathematics
This curriculum is based on the South Sudan Primary 4 Mathematics syllabus developed by the Ministry of General Education and Instruction. It aims to provide a fun, practical approach to mathematics while imparting lifelong skills. The curriculum comprises five units:
Unit 1: Numbers
- Reading, Writing, Comparing, and Ordering Numbers up to 5 Digits: Learners develop skills in reading, writing, comparing, and ordering numbers up to five digits. They use tools like the abacus to understand place value.
- Rounding Off Numbers to the Nearest Thousands: Learners practice rounding off numbers to the nearest thousands.
- Multiples and Factors of Whole Numbers: Learners identify multiples and factors of whole numbers, reinforcing multiplication skills. They also practice multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000.
- Addition and Subtraction of Fractions: Learners add and subtract fractions with the same denominators. They also explore equivalent fractions using practical examples.
- Ratio: Learners investigate ratios as a way of comparing quantities, relating them to fractions.
- Percentages: Learners explore percentages as parts per hundred and practice converting percentages to decimals and vice versa. They also express percentages as fractions and ratios.
Unit 2: Measurement
- Length: Learners measure and draw lengths to the nearest centimeter and meter. They also convert between centimeters and meters.
- Area: Learners calculate the area of squares and rectangles using the formulas side x side (s²) and length x width (lw), respectively. They use units of cm² and m².
- Volume and Capacity: Learners investigate volume by arranging cubes and solve problems in cm³ and m³. They estimate capacity using various containers and practice measuring in liters.
- Weight: Learners estimate and measure weight using grams and kilograms. They also explore the concept of balance using a beam balance.
- Money: Learners work with South Sudanese currency, practicing buying and selling scenarios. They also calculate profit and loss.
- Time: Learners tell time in hours and minutes, including using the 24-hour clock system.
Unit 3: Geometry
- Intersecting Lines: Learners identify and draw intersecting lines.
- Perpendicular Lines: Learners identify and draw perpendicular lines, recognizing them in real-world objects.
- Parallel Lines: Learners identify and draw parallel lines.
- Angles: Learners identify and compare different types of angles: right angles, acute angles, and obtuse angles. They use a protractor to measure angles in degrees.
Unit 4: Algebra
- Like and Unlike Terms: Learners identify like and unlike terms in algebraic expressions.
- Algebraic Problems Involving Addition and Subtraction: Learners add and subtract simple algebraic expressions.
- Formation and Simplification of Algebraic Expressions: Learners form and simplify algebraic expressions from word problems.
Unit 5: Statistics
- Data Collection: Learners collect data through practical activities.
- Methods of Recording and Representing Data: Learners record data using tables and represent it using bar graphs and line graphs. They also interpret data and explain their observations.
