South Sudan Primary 1 English Curriculum

The South Sudan Primary 1 English curriculum aims to equip pupils with foundational English language skills. The curriculum focuses on speaking and listening skills in the early years (Primary 1-3) as students are concurrently learning to read and write in their national language. The curriculum follows the broader South Sudan education system, an 8-4-4 structure (8 years primary, 4 years secondary, 4 years university). However, implementation can vary across the country. Over 70% of children are out of school, presenting a significant challenge to the education system.

Curriculum Goals

The South Sudan National Curriculum has four main aims:

  • Good citizenship
  • Successful lifelong learning
  • Creative and patriotic individuals
  • Environmentally responsible members of society

These aims are integrated across all subjects, including English.
