South Sudan Secondary 1 Mathematics Curriculum
This curriculum is based on the South Sudan National Curriculum and aims to provide students with a strong foundation in mathematics while also equipping them with practical life skills. The curriculum is designed to be fun and engaging, encouraging collaboration through group work and stimulating illustrations. The course covers five units:
Unit 1: Natural Numbers, Factors, and Proportion
- Natural Numbers: Introduction to the number system, place value, and the concepts of even and odd numbers.
- Factors of Natural Numbers: Finding factors, prime numbers, composite numbers, and expressing numbers as products of prime factors.
- Highest Common Factor (HCF): Determining the HCF of two or more numbers.
- Lowest Common Multiple (LCM): Determining the LCM of two or more numbers.
- Fractions: Understanding different types of fractions (proper, improper, mixed), converting between types, comparing fractions, and performing operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with fractions.
- Standard Form: Expressing numbers in standard form (scientific notation).
- Percentages: Converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages; applying percentages to real-life situations.
- Profit and Loss: Calculating profit and loss, including percentage profit and loss, and considering overheads.
Unit 2: Measurement
- Conversion of Units: Converting between different units of length, area, volume, and capacity within the metric system.
- Perimeter: Calculating the perimeter of various polygons and circles (circumference).
- Area: Calculating the area of various polygons and circles.
- Surface Area: Calculating the surface area of three-dimensional figures, including rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, cubes, cylinders, and spheres.
- Volume: Calculating the volume of three-dimensional figures, including rectangular prisms, solids with uniform cross-sections (e.g., triangular prisms, cylinders), pyramids, cones, and spheres.
- Capacity: Understanding the relationship between volume and capacity, and converting between units of capacity.
Unit 3: Geometry and Trigonometry
- Angles: Understanding different types of angles and their properties.
- Points, Lines, and Planes: Basic geometric concepts, including points, lines, parallel lines, intersecting lines, and planes.
- Triangles: Classifying triangles by sides (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) and angles (acute, right, obtuse); understanding angle properties of triangles, including interior and exterior angles.
- Polygons: Defining and classifying polygons, including regular polygons and quadrilaterals (parallelograms, rectangles, rhombuses, squares, trapeziums, kites).
- Solids: Identifying and classifying three-dimensional solids, including polyhedra (e.g., prisms, pyramids) and solids with curved surfaces (e.g., cylinders, spheres).
- Transformation Geometry: Performing translations, rotations, reflections, and enlargements.
- Bearings: Understanding and using bearings to describe direction.
- Scale Drawings: Constructing and interpreting scale drawings, including applications to navigation problems.
- Trigonometry: Introducing sine, cosine, and tangent functions; applying trigonometry to solve problems involving right-angled triangles, including navigation and angles of elevation and depression.
Unit 4: Algebra
- Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities: Writing algebraic expressions, simplifying expressions, and solving equations and inequalities.
- Simplification of Expressions: Combining like terms, removing parentheses, and using exponent rules.
- Algebraic Substitution: Substituting values for variables in algebraic expressions.
- Negative Numbers: Working with negative numbers in algebraic expressions.
- Expansion of Algebraic Expressions: Expanding algebraic expressions, including multiplying out brackets and squaring brackets.
- Factorizing Algebraic Expressions: Factorizing algebraic expressions, including common factors and factorizing quadratic expressions.
- Solving Equations: Solving linear equations, including equations with unknowns on both sides.
- Simultaneous Equations: Solving simultaneous linear equations.
Unit 5: Statistics and Probability
- Types of Data: Distinguishing between discrete numerical data, continuous data, and categorical data.
- Mean, Mode, and Median: Calculating measures of central tendency (mean, mode, median) for different data sets.
- Frequency Tables and Bar Charts: Organizing and displaying discrete data.
- Frequency Histograms: Organizing and displaying continuous data.
- Probability: Understanding basic probability concepts, including experimental probability, theoretical probability, sample space, complementary events, and the principle of exhaustion.
- Using Grids to Find Probabilities: Illustrating sample spaces using grids and calculating probabilities.
- Tree Diagrams: Illustrating sample spaces using tree diagrams and calculating probabilities.
