This course introduces students to the world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). It covers a range of topics, from computer networks and data transmission to spreadsheets, social media, and ethical considerations.

Unit 1: Computer Networks

  • Introduction to Computer Networks: This section defines computer networks, their uses, and the standards they should meet. It also covers the history of computer networks, highlighting their evolution and the impact of technological advancements.
  • Benefits of Computer Networks: This topic explores the advantages of using computer networks, including resource sharing, data sharing, cost efficiency, flexibility, and data management.
  • Types of Computer Networks: This section details different network types, including Personal Area Networks (PAN), Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), and Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN). It also covers wireless networks and their applications.
  • Network Topology: This topic explores different network topologies, including Bus, Ring, Star, Mesh, Tree, and Hybrid topologies, discussing their features, advantages, and disadvantages.
  • Data Transmission Modes: This section explains different data transmission modes, including Simplex, Half-Duplex, and Full-Duplex, and their applications in various communication scenarios.
  • Intranet: This topic defines intranets, compares them to the internet, and discusses their use in organizations, including file sharing and resource sharing using network applications.
  • Microsoft Outlook: This section introduces Microsoft Outlook as a personal information manager, covering creating and managing contacts, setting up events, scheduling meetings, creating task lists, and sharing files and folders.

Unit 2: Spreadsheets

  • Introduction to Spreadsheets: This section defines spreadsheets, their uses in accounting, statistical analysis, data management, asset tracking, and forecasting.
  • Setting up and Managing Excel Worksheets: This topic covers creating, renaming, navigating, inserting and removing rows and columns, adjusting row height and column width, and saving workbooks.
  • Importing and Exporting Data: This section explains how to import and export data in MS Excel, including importing text files and exporting data to different text file formats.
  • Cell References: This topic covers different types of cell references: relative, absolute, and mixed, and their use in formulas and functions.
  • Entering Data: This section explains how to enter different data types in Excel, including numbers with fractions, numbers as text, dates, and times. It also covers using AutoFill to enter a series of values.
  • Formatting Numbers: This topic covers various number formats in Excel, including General, Number, Currency, Accounting, Percentage, Fraction, Scientific, and Text.
  • Formulas and Functions: This section introduces formulas and functions, including arithmetic operators, operator precedence, entering formulas, common formula errors, and different function categories.
  • Inventories in MS Excel: This topic explains how to manage inventories using Excel, including creating inventory lists, formatting, and using formulas for inventory management.
  • Charts: This section covers creating charts in Excel, different chart types, adding chart elements like titles, legends, and gridlines, and using charts for data visualization.
  • Statistical Analysis: This topic explores using Excel for statistical analysis, including correlation and linear regression, using the Data Analysis Toolpak.
  • Sorting and Filtering Data: This section explains how to sort and filter data in Excel, including sorting by multiple levels and using filters to display specific data.
  • What-If Analysis: This topic covers different types of what-if analysis in Excel, including manual what-if analysis, data tables, Scenario Manager, Goal Seek, and Solver.
  • Workbook Protection: This section explains how to protect workbooks by setting passwords to prevent unauthorized changes.

Unit 3: Social Media

  • Introduction to Social Media: This section defines social media, differentiates it from traditional media, and discusses its classification and benefits for individuals and institutions.
  • Common Social Media Sites: This topic explores popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, covering creating accounts, using their features, and communicating effectively.
  • Ethical and Legal Issues: This section discusses the ethical and legal considerations surrounding social media use, including privacy, freedom of speech, data leakage, and identity theft.
