South Sudan Secondary Mathematics S-2 Curriculum

This curriculum is based on the South Sudan Secondary Mathematics 2 Student's Book, developed by the Ministry of General Education and Instruction. The book aims to provide a practical approach to mathematics while imparting lifelong skills. It fully covers the national syllabus for Secondary 2. The textbook includes:

      • Surds: Introduction to surds, operations with surds (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), simplifying surds, and rationalizing the denominator.
      • Commercial Arithmetic: Foreign exchange rates, simple interest, income tax calculations, compound interest, appreciation and depreciation, and hire purchase.
  • Unit 2: Geometric Figures and Pythagoras Theorem
      • Review of Surface Area of Shapes: Calculating surface area for various shapes.
      • Coordinate Geometry: Cartesian plane, plotting points, and equations of lines.
      • The Equation of a Line: Understanding and applying the equation of a line.
      • Gradient: Calculating and interpreting the gradient of a line.
      • Proving Pythagoras' Theorem: Exploring different proofs of the theorem.
      • The Unit Circle: Trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent) and their relationship to the unit circle.
  • Unit 3: Algebra
      • Algebraic Expressions and Equations: Expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions.
      • Expansion: Expanding brackets and simplifying quadratic expressions.
      • Solving Quadratic Equations: Factorizing and solving quadratic equations.
      • Vectors: Vector translations, position vectors, and operations with vectors.
      • Sets: Definition of sets, set notation, subsets, complements, union, intersection, and Venn diagrams.
      • Matrices: Definition of matrices, matrix operations (addition, subtraction, scalar multiplication, matrix multiplication), identity matrix, determinant, inverse of a matrix, and solving simultaneous equations using matrices.
      • Functions: Definition of functions, function notation, composite functions, and inverse functions.
  • Unit 4: Statistics
      • Mean, Mode, and Median: Review of measures of central tendency.
      • Assumed Mean: Calculating the mean using an assumed mean.
      • Cumulative Frequency: Cumulative frequency tables and graphs (ogives), finding median, quartiles, and percentiles.
