Civil Technology Grades 10-12

This course focuses on the built environment and the technological process, emphasizing practical skills and the application of scientific principles. It aims to equip learners with the knowledge and skills to enter further education or the workplace after completing Grade 12. The curriculum is divided into three main areas:

• Civil Services: Includes water supply, sewerage, storm-water management, and electrical systems.
• Construction: Covers foundations, brickwork, concrete, waterproofing, formwork, and finishes.
• Woodworking: Focuses on joinery, roof construction, and the use of different types of wood.

The curriculum emphasizes safety, graphics and communication, materials, equipment, terminology, applied mechanics, quantities, and joining.

Grade 10

• Term 1: Introduction to safety, graphics and communication, materials, and equipment. Begin PAT.
• Term 2: Applied mechanics, concrete, mortar, screeds, and further work on the PAT.
• Term 3: Foundations, brickwork, waterproofing, excavations, woodwork, and civil services (water supply, storm-water, and sewerage).
• Term 4: Sewerage systems, electrical systems, quantities, joining (anchors, screws, nails, glues, and wood joints), and PAT completion.

Grade 11

• Term 1: Safety, graphics and communication, materials (blocks, metals, and glass), equipment (hand and power tools, construction machinery), applied mechanics, and PAT.
• Term 2: Applied mechanics, reinforcement, plastering, brickwork, cavity walls, lintels, waterproofing, formwork, shoring, woodwork, and PAT.
• Term 3: Woodworking, finishing (plastering, tiling, and painting), civil services (water supply, hot water systems, sewerage, and storm-water), and PAT.
• Term 4: Electrical systems, quantities, joining (brickwork, wood, and plumbing pipes), and PAT completion.

Grade 12

• Term 1: Safety, materials, graphics and communication (including CAD), equipment, applied mechanics, concrete, piling, rib and block floors, and PAT.
• Term 2: Reinforcing, formwork, drywall construction, brickwork, woodwork, roof covering, waterproofing, and PAT.
• Term 3: Finishing, civil services (cold water supply, hot water systems, sewerage, storm-water, and electrical systems), joining, and PAT completion.
• Term 4: Quantities and final examinations.

Assessment

Assessment is divided into:

• School-Based Assessment (SBA): 25% of the final mark. Includes tests, assignments, classwork, homework, and practical work.
• Practical Assessment Task (PAT): 25% of the final mark. A year-long project focusing on design, working drawings, and creating an artifact.
• Final Examination: 50% of the final mark. A comprehensive written exam covering the entire year's content.

A minimum of 30% is required to pass the subject.
