South Sudan Primary 1 Social Studies Curriculum

This curriculum is designed to be learner-centered and competency-based, aiming to meet the educational needs of the people of South Sudan. Unit 1: Now and Then

This unit focuses on the family and its history. Students learn about family members, their roles, and how families have changed over time. They explore family history through stories and discussions, and create family trees. The unit also covers objects found at home and school, differentiating between modern and traditional items.

Unit 2: Where We Live

This unit explores the student's immediate environment. Students learn about physical features in their surroundings, both natural (rivers, mountains) and man-made (buildings, roads). They discuss the importance of protecting the environment and participate in activities like tree planting. The unit also introduces the concept of economic features and activities.

Unit 3: Exploring Our World

This unit introduces maps and their uses. Students explore different types of maps, learn about map elements (symbols, keys, titles, frames), and practice locating places on a map. They also discuss how maps can show changes in a place over time.

Unit 4: Working Together

This unit focuses on the community and the people who help us. Students learn about different jobs and roles within the community, and discuss the importance of teamwork. They participate in role-playing activities and explore how their community has changed over time.

Unit 5: Problem Solving

This unit addresses safety and conflict resolution. Students identify dangerous objects and situations at home and school, and discuss ways to stay safe. They also learn about the importance of peace and practice resolving conflicts peacefully. They create rules for preventing fights and participate in activities that promote peace.
