Spain Primero de Primaria School Syllabus - Natural Science (Ciencias de la Naturaleza)

This syllabus entry is based on the Real Decreto 157/2022, which outlines the national curriculum framework for primary education in Spain. Natural Science (Ciencias de la Naturaleza) in Primero de Primaria focuses on developing a basic understanding of the natural world through observation and exploration. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on activities and the development of scientific thinking skills. It is designed to be integrated with other subjects, promoting a holistic approach to learning.

Key Stage 1 (First Cycle - Grades 1 & 2) - Natural Science (Ciencias de la Naturaleza)

The Natural Science curriculum for Key Stage 1 is designed to foster curiosity and exploration of the natural world. It encourages students to ask questions, make predictions, and engage in simple investigations. The curriculum is divided into three core knowledge areas:

A. Scientific Culture:

  • Introduction to scientific inquiry: This includes basic observation skills, simple classifications, and looking for patterns in nature. Students learn to use appropriate tools for observation and measurement, and begin to develop a basic scientific vocabulary. The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of curiosity and initiative in scientific exploration.
  • Life on our planet: Students learn about the basic needs of living things, including humans, and how they differ from inanimate objects. They explore how living things adapt to their habitats and learn to classify living things based on observable characteristics. The curriculum also introduces healthy habits related to physical well-being, such as hygiene, balanced nutrition, exercise, and rest. Emotional and social well-being are also addressed, including recognizing emotions and respecting diversity.
  • Matter, forces, and energy: This section introduces light and sound as forms of energy, exploring their sources and everyday uses. Students learn about the observable properties of materials, their origins, and how they are used in everyday objects. The curriculum also introduces the concept of pure substances and mixtures, and explores simple structures.

B. Technology and Digitalization:

  • Digitalization of the personal learning environment: Students learn to use basic digital devices and resources safely and appropriately within the educational context. This includes using digital resources for communication in safe and supervised environments.
  • Design projects and computational thinking: Students are introduced to the phases of design projects, including prototyping, testing, and communication. They learn about appropriate materials for design projects and begin to explore computational thinking through guided problem-solving activities. Basic teamwork strategies are also introduced.

C. Societies and Territories:

  • Challenges of the present world: This section covers basic concepts about the Earth in the universe, including its elements, movements, and dynamics. Students learn about atmospheric phenomena and their impact on daily life and biological cycles. Basic spatial and temporal reasoning skills are also developed.
  • Societies in time: Students develop a basic understanding of time and learn to use everyday objects as sources for reflecting on change and continuity. They explore local history and family biographies, and learn about artistic expressions through time.
  • Civic literacy: This section introduces the concept of living in a community, focusing on family, neighborhood, and school environments. Students learn about commitments, shared responsibilities, participation, and rules within these contexts. They also explore spaces, resources, and services in their environment, and learn about different forms of social interaction. The curriculum emphasizes respect for diversity and promotes a culture of peace and non-violence.
  • Eco-social awareness: Students learn about their natural and human-made landscapes, and explore the impact of human actions on the environment. They are introduced to eco-social responsibility and learn about actions for conservation and sustainable use of common goods. The curriculum also emphasizes sustainable lifestyles, including responsible use of water and waste management.
