Spain Primero de Primaria School Syllabus - Physical Education (Educación Física)

The Physical Education curriculum for Primero de Primaria in Spain, as outlined in Real Decreto 157/2022, focuses on developing fundamental movement skills and promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. It emphasizes the importance of physical activity, understanding one's body, and exploring various movement-based cultural expressions. The curriculum aims to equip students with the necessary skills and attitudes to become physically literate individuals.

Specific Competencies

The curriculum outlines five specific competencies for Physical Education in Primero de Primaria:

1. Adopting an active and healthy lifestyle: This involves regular participation in physical activities, games, and sports, and adopting behaviors that enhance physical, mental, and social health. It also includes understanding and applying individual and collective responsibility during physical activity. The goal is to internalize and integrate habits of regular physical activity that contribute to overall well-being.

2. Adapting elements of body schema, physical, perceptual-motor, and coordinative abilities, as well as motor skills and abilities: This competency focuses on applying perception, decision-making, and execution processes appropriate to the internal logic and objectives of different situations. Students learn to respond to the demands of motor projects and practices with various purposes in everyday life contexts.

3. Developing self-regulation and interaction processes within the framework of motor practice: This involves demonstrating empathy and inclusivity, utilizing social skills, and fostering attitudes of cooperation, respect, teamwork, and sportsmanship. It emphasizes respecting individual differences regardless of ethnicity, social background, gender, or ability level, to contribute to positive social interactions and ethical commitment in various spaces.

4. Recognizing and practicing different playful, physical-sports, and artistic-expressive manifestations of motor culture: Students learn to appreciate the influence and aesthetic and creative contributions of motor culture to traditional and contemporary culture. They integrate these manifestations into motor situations regularly used in everyday life.

5. Valuing different natural and urban environments as contexts for motor practice: This competency focuses on interacting with these environments and understanding the importance of their conservation from a sustainable perspective. Students adopt measures of individual responsibility during the practice of games and physical-sports activities, promoting efficient and respectful practices within the environment and participating in its care and improvement.

Evaluation Criteria - First Cycle (Primero and Segundo de Primaria)

The evaluation criteria for the first cycle (which includes Primero de Primaria) assess the development of the specific competencies. For Competency 1, students are evaluated on their ability to identify active travel as a healthy practice, explore their motor skills through play, and apply basic health measures in everyday situations. They are also assessed on their participation in warm-up and cool-down games and their understanding of the positive values promoted by shared motor practice. For Competency 2, the focus is on recognizing the importance of setting clear goals in motor projects, making decisions in motor practice contexts, and using qualitative and quantitative components of motor skills in different situations. Competency 3 emphasizes identifying emotions during play, respecting rules and fair play, and developing social skills in daily motor practices. Competency 4 assesses active participation in artistic-expressive cultural manifestations, appreciating achievements in sports, and adapting communication through body language. Finally, Competency 5 evaluates participation in recreational activities in natural and urban environments, demonstrating respect, care, and conservation of these spaces.
