Spain Primary Curriculum - Religion or Ethics (Optional)
Religion and Ethics
In Spain, primary education is compulsory for children aged 6 to 12, encompassing six academic years. Within this framework, students can choose between religious studies and a secular ethics course. Historically, Roman Catholicism held a prominent place in the curriculum, with public schools required to offer it. However, more recent educational reforms have shifted towards a more secular approach.
Religious Studies
While specific details about the current primary religious studies curriculum are limited, it's known that four major religious confessions are recognized by the government: Catholic, Protestant or Evangelical, Jewish, and Muslim. Previously, Catholic doctrine formed the core of religious education.
Ethics and Values
As an alternative to religious studies, students can opt for "Ethics and Values" or "Social and Civic Values." This secular subject focuses on moral education, encompassing topics such as human rights, children's rights, constitutional values, and gender equality. This course was introduced as part of educational reforms aimed at providing a non-confessional option. The ethics curriculum begins around age 6 with "Social and Civic Values." In the final two years of primary education, "Education in Civic and Ethical Values" is taught. |
