Spain ESO Curriculum - Physical Education

Physical Education in the Spanish ESO curriculum emphasizes the development of a physically active and healthy lifestyle. The curriculum aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to maintain lifelong physical activity through autonomous planning and self-regulation.

The curriculum addresses physical activity within various contexts, including individual, cooperative, competitive, and collaborative-opposition scenarios. Students engage in diverse motor practices with varying objectives, encompassing recreational, competitive, functional, social, expressive, creative, cathartic, and interactive experiences within urban and natural environments.

The Physical Education curriculum is structured around six core knowledge blocks:

1. Active and Healthy Life: This block focuses on the physical, mental, and social components of health, promoting positive relationships within functional physical activity and sports contexts. It also addresses antisocial, discriminatory, or unhealthy behaviors that may occur in these settings.

2. Organization and Management of Physical Activity: This block covers choosing physical activities, preparing for motor practice, planning and self-regulating motor projects, and managing safety before, during, and after physical activity.

3. Problem-Solving in Motor Situations: This transdisciplinary block addresses decision-making, efficient use of qualitative and quantitative components of motor skills, and motor creativity within various practical contexts.

4. Emotional Self-Regulation and Social Interaction in Motor Situations: This block focuses on developing emotional regulation processes in physical activity and sports settings, as well as social skills and inclusive relationships within these contexts.

5. Manifestations of Motor Culture: This block encompasses traditional motor culture, contemporary artistic-expressive culture, and sports as a cultural manifestation. It explores the role of sports in society, including its economic, political, social, and health implications.

6. Efficient and Sustainable Interaction with the Environment: This block emphasizes interaction with natural and urban environments, including their use through motor skills, conservation from a sustainable perspective, and their shared nature from a community perspective.

The curriculum promotes an interdisciplinary approach, integrating movement and physical activity into other learning situations and subjects whenever possible. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the "why" and "what for" of physical activity, fostering a holistic approach to student development. The curriculum also encourages the use of technology to combat sedentary lifestyles and promote healthy digital habits.
