Sri Lanka GCE Ordinary Level English as a Second Language
The Sri Lanka GCE Ordinary Level English as a Second Language examination is a national level exam administered by the Department of Examinations of the Ministry of Education. It is typically held in December and serves as the basic certification of completion of secondary education in Sri Lanka. The exam is based on the Cambridge University Ordinary Level qualification.
Exam Format
The GCE Ordinary Level English as a Second Language exam consists of two papers. Paper I is a one-hour exam focusing on grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and short writing tasks (50-60 words). Question types include fill-in-the-blank, matching, short answer, and short compositions. Paper II is a two-hour exam.
Curriculum
The curriculum aims to develop students' ability to communicate accurately, appropriately, and effectively in English. It emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. A revised syllabus for Grade 11 was introduced with a focus on retaining core language skills while adapting to the needs of a multilingual Sri Lankan society.
