Sri Lanka GCE Ordinary Level - Basket 3 Subjects

This document details the Basket 3 subjects offered in the Sri Lanka GCE Ordinary Level examination. These subjects include Information & Communication Technology, Agriculture & Food Technology, Health & Physical Education, and Communication & Media Studies. The GCE Ordinary Level examination, often abbreviated as GCE O/L, is taken after grade 11. In 2024, the examination commenced on May 6th at 3,527 examination centers across Sri Lanka, with a total of 452,979 students participating. The exams concluded on May 15th, 2024. The exams are administered in Sinhala, Tamil, and English.

Information & Communication Technology (ICT)

This syllabus aims to introduce ICT as a technical subject. Students who qualify at the GCE O/L level and wish to pursue a career in ICT can continue studying the subject at the GCE Advanced Level. There are numerous resources available for students, including past papers, notes, and even e-learning programs. In December 2022, the Minister of Education announced plans to include ICT as a core subject in the GCE Ordinary Level examination.

Agriculture & Food Technology

This subject covers various aspects of agriculture and food technology. Resources such as past papers and marking schemes are available for students preparing for the exam. The Department of Agriculture also offers programs such as the National Diploma in Agriculture Production Technology, a supervisory-level technical officer program. Online tutors are also available for students seeking additional support.

Health & Physical Education

This subject focuses on health and physical well-being. Students can access past papers and other resources to aid in their studies. The National Institute of Education (NIE) has a dedicated Health and Physical Education Unit.

Communication & Media Studies

This subject explores the field of communication and media. Past papers, notes, and books are available for students. The University of Colombo offers a Diploma in Communication and Media Studies, which is equivalent to NVQ Level 05 and can be upgraded to Level 03. A research paper published in 2022 examined the challenges and opportunities in media education in Sri Lanka's secondary education system.
