Sri Lanka GCE Ordinary Level: Optional Subjects

Students taking the Sri Lanka GCE Ordinary Level examination are required to choose three optional subjects from different baskets. Historically, the structure included specific baskets, but reforms are underway. From 2026, the examination will focus on seven core subjects: Science, Mathematics, Native Language, English, Religion, Moral Education, Information Technology, and History. Students will also select three additional subjects assessed by schools.

Basket System (Pre-2026 Reform)

Previously, students selected three elective subjects from designated baskets. One online source lists the following:

Basket 1:

  • Business & Accounting Studies
  • Geography
  • Civic Education
  • Sinhala as a Second Language (for Tamil speakers)
  • Tamil as a Second Language (for Sinhala speakers)
  • Pali Language
  • Sanskrit Language

Basket 2:

  • Oriental Music
  • Western Music
  • Carnatic Music
  • Dancing
  • Art
  • Drama
  • English Literature
  • Sinhala Literature
  • Other aesthetic subjects

Basket 3:

  • Information & Communication Technology
  • Agriculture & Food Technology
  • Health & Physical Education
  • Media Studies
