Sri Lanka Grade 6 Curriculum - English
This curriculum focuses on developing communicative competence in English. It comprises eight key competencies, further divided into 47 specific competency levels. The curriculum aims to build a strong foundation in English, enabling students to use the language effectively in various contexts. The following are the key competencies and their corresponding learning outcomes:
1. Identifying the Sounds of English Language:
- 1.1 Pronouncing English Words Properly: Students learn to identify and pronounce long and short vowel sounds, as well as consonant sounds, in words up to six letters long. This includes practicing various vowel-consonant combinations and using them in different situations, such as words, phrases, sentences, rhymes, and tongue twisters. Activities include listening and reading, ticking, underlining, circling, showing, reading aloud, matching, categorizing, and games. (3 periods)
- 1.2 Reading Aloud Different Types of Texts Accurately and Meaningfully: Students practice reading aloud various text types, including tongue twisters, announcements, dialogues, conversations, instructions, news, stories, poems, role-plays, and speeches. Activities include loud reading and acting out. (3 periods)
2. Using Mechanics of Writing with Understanding:
- 2.1 Using Capital and Simple Letters Appropriately: Students learn the rules of capitalization, including the beginning of sentences, the pronoun "I," and proper nouns (names of people and places). Text types include simple sentences, passages, dialogues, poems, letters, and notes. Activities involve rewriting, underlining errors, and correcting. (3 periods)
- 2.2 Using Full Stop Appropriately: Students learn to use full stops at the end of sentences and with abbreviations (e.g., Mr., Mrs., Dr.). Text types include simple sentences, passages, and dialogues. Activities involve rewriting and correcting. (3 periods)
- 2.3 Using Question Mark Appropriately: Students learn to use question marks at the end of questions. Text types include simple passages and dialogues with questions. Activities include classifying questions and statements, and placing punctuation marks correctly. (3 periods)
3. Engaging in Active Listening and Responding Appropriately:
- 3.1 Responding to Simple Announcements Appropriately: Students practice listening to and responding to simple announcements, typically at the school level. Activities involve listening and responding to various types of announcements. (2 periods)
- 3.2 Listening and Following Instructions and Responding to Requests: Students practice listening to and following simple instructions and requests. Activities include listen-and-draw, listen-and-colour, listen-and-trace, listen-and-do/act, listen-and-find, and games like "Simon Says." (3 periods)
- 3.3 Listening to a Simple Text for Specific Information: Students practice listening to simple texts to extract specific information, such as names, dates, places, etc. Text types include simple dialogues, stories, descriptions, processes, and songs. Activities include matching, labeling diagrams, multiple-choice questions, and filling in blanks or grids. (3 periods)
4. Building Up Vocabulary Using Words Appropriately and Accurately to Convey Precise Meaning: (18 periods total for this competency)
- 4.1 Using Masculine and Feminine Forms of Nouns Appropriately: Students learn and practice using masculine and feminine forms of nouns. Text types include simple folk tales, dialogues, playlets, announcements, speeches, and poems. Activities include matching, categorizing, puzzles, multiple-choice questions, and filling in blanks. (3 periods)
- 4.2 Using Terms Referring to Young Ones of Animals Appropriately: Students learn and practice using terms for baby animals. Text types include simple folk tales, fairy tales, playlets, speeches, poems, and songs. Activities include matching, categorizing, completing sentences/stories, multiple-choice questions, filling in blanks, and games. (3 periods)
- 4.3 Finding Synonyms and Antonyms for Given Words: Students practice identifying and using synonyms and antonyms. Text types include dialogues, role-plays, simple folk stories, poems, and passages. Activities include matching, categorizing, multiple-choice questions, and filling in blanks. (4 periods)
- 4.4 Using Affixes to Change the Word Class and the Meaning of Words: Students learn to use prefixes and suffixes to change the word class (noun, adjective, adverb, verb) and meaning of words. Text types include dialogues, role-plays, simple folk tales, fairy tales, poems, songs, and passages. Activities include matching, categorizing, multiple-choice questions, and filling in blanks or grids. (4 periods)
- 4.5 Forming the Plurals of Nouns: Students learn to form plurals by adding -s, -es, -en, and through vowel changes. Text types include sentences and passages. Activities include matching, completing sentences, and pluralizing sentences with "be" verbs. (4 periods)
