Sri Lanka Grade 7 Civic Education

This course aims to develop students' life competencies and civic understanding, enabling them to become responsible and active citizens. The curriculum is divided into two parts: Life Competencies and Civic Education.

Part I: Life Competencies

This section focuses on developing essential life skills, covering the following areas:

  • Self-Realization: Students learn to identify their abilities, skills, and potential, building self-dignity and working towards life goals. They also learn to differentiate between beneficial and harmful societal influences, choosing positive forces for personal growth.
  • Leisure for Personality Development: This section emphasizes the importance of using leisure time effectively for personal growth through sports, hobbies, and aesthetic activities. Students explore various leisure activities and their benefits, learning to select meaningful pursuits that enhance their physical and mental well-being.
  • Exemplary Life Respecting Morals: This unit focuses on the importance of values and morals for personal and societal well-being. Students explore different values, their significance, and how to incorporate them into their daily lives. They learn to behave ethically in various situations, contributing to a positive social environment.
  • Data and Information in Life Situations and Effective Learning: This unit equips students with the skills to critically analyze data and information from various sources. They learn to think creatively and critically, applying these skills to solve problems and make informed decisions in different life situations.
  • Maintaining Good Interpersonal Relationships: This unit focuses on developing and maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships. Students learn about the importance of communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution. They explore strategies for building strong relationships with family, friends, and community members, contributing to a harmonious social environment.

Part II: Civic Education

This section focuses on developing civic understanding and responsible citizenship, covering the following areas:

  • Family: Students explore the importance of family as the basic social unit, understanding their rights, duties, and responsibilities within the family structure. They also learn about different family types, relationships, customs, and traditions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining healthy family relationships and interactions with neighboring families.
  • Society: This unit introduces students to the concept of society and its various organizations. They explore interrelationships within society, understanding their rights, duties, and responsibilities as citizens. They also learn about the importance of laws, regulations, and the legal framework within which rights are exercised, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling civic duties for societal well-being.
  • Culture: This unit explores Sri Lanka's multicultural society, emphasizing the importance of respecting diverse cultures while valuing one's own. Students learn about different cultural features, traditions, and festivals, promoting understanding and cooperation among different cultural groups. They also learn about national identity, unity, and the significance of national symbols, fostering a sense of belonging and patriotism.

Sri Lanka Grade 8 Civic Education

This course builds upon the Grade 7 curriculum, delving deeper into civic concepts and responsibilities. The curriculum covers the following key areas:

  • Public Services: Students learn about the importance of public services, identifying various services available in their area and the institutions responsible for providing them. They explore the duties and responsibilities of both service providers and citizens in ensuring effective and efficient public service delivery.
  • Democratic Society: This unit focuses on understanding and practicing democratic principles within the family, school, and broader society. Students learn about child rights and responsibilities, the importance of leadership, and the qualities of a democratic citizen. They explore the benefits of a democratic way of life, emphasizing cooperation, tolerance, and respect for diverse viewpoints.
  • Multicultural Society: This unit builds upon the Grade 7 curriculum, exploring the features and benefits of a multicultural society in greater depth. Students learn about cultural diversity in Sri Lanka and other countries, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence and cooperation among different cultural groups. They explore strategies for cultural integration and building sustainable peace in a multicultural context.
  • Contemporary Problems: This unit addresses contemporary societal challenges, including accidents, disasters, and road safety. Students learn about different types of disasters and accidents, their causes, and preventive measures. They also explore the importance of responsible behavior, following road rules, and minimizing risks associated with chemicals and unsustainable consumption patterns.
  • Conflict Resolution and Decision Making: Students develop skills in problem-solving, conflict resolution, and decision-making. They learn to identify and define problems, explore innovative solutions, and make informed decisions in various life situations. They also learn to manage emotions effectively, promoting constructive communication and peaceful conflict resolution.
  • World of Work: This unit introduces students to the world of work, exploring different job fields and the concept of dignity of labor. They learn about the importance of skilled labor, training opportunities, and the qualities of a good worker. They also explore workers' rights and responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of customer satisfaction and the impact of earning on lifestyles.
